Personality:
The thing about Ryuuta is that he's kind of a douchebag. Actually scratch that, he's an absolute douchebag. And that's more or less his character.
Okay, I'm suppose to write more things about him and dissuade to you, the reader, that he isn't so much of a douchebag so here we go.
I got nothing.
Alright I kid, Ryuuta Ippongi is a douchebag, a supreme dudebro asshole who has no care or principle with what other people might think on a regular basis. Ryuuta holds a strict code to his ideal in masculinity, which it can be easily imagine like that asshole you met at least once in your life that believes in the male power fantasy. While his case can be easily blamed in cultural difference in background, Ryuuta tends to be more obnoxiously vocal about it, up to the point it leaves one to wonder whether he just made himself a caricature of the masculine stereotype.
And in some levels, that would be right. Ryuuta does hold a strong principle to what he believes in masculinity and he could get carried away, but most of his fronts tend to be all (loud, obnoxious) barks than any actual bite. He does find that men should be strong and tough, carry all the weight and burden but never will he say that woman should stay in the kitchen. His drive is a bit more complex than what it seems initially, living with only his mother during childhood, he actually has quite the respect for the opposite gender, especially motherly types. He drives more to the point that masculinity means being tough so one could do heavy lifting to help their mothers, because a caring mother doesn't deserve a useless son. Although, he has yet to realize much of this complex had a lot to do with him being a momma's boy.
(Though he still likes to pick up ladies, that's kind of a thing that doesn't have anything to do with anything, but he can appreciate physical one night stands every so often.)
The thing is though, while he had always been the person to believe in helping others even if it was only giving them some cheer to get motivated, he feels that this mindset of his isn't as useful as he first believe. Before Hajime had joined the team, his drive was slowly getting replaced by a more cynical outlook in life. Ryuuta has great fear of how he's been growing more and more pessimistic of things, but also felt no reason to change the inevitable. The actual real problem with him is that he's too stubborn to look pass things, he believes that there are just things that are set in stone possibly to balance how there are also things that people can change if they put their mind to it. He feels that he could pass the torch to Hajime once he's no longer the new kid, he's somewhat blindsided to the fact that not only Hajime but many people he had cheered proves that he still has more than enough faith in humanity than he realize.
And it really isn't that hard to see, it's just Ryuuta being thickheaded. Despite his overly macho tendencies or how had become cynical at the tender age of 27, he cares about people whether they're in his close social circle or random bystanders. He doesn't let anyone see how worn out he really is, he plays up his ability to interact with the younger generation and thus giving him a bit reputation of a manchild to hid the fact he's withering away in fear. He enjoys playing the role so much it gives him more chance to play the role as the annoying older brother to his teammates, whom he feels more like a family than just a group he works together. Except Sayaka because complicated feelings because. You know.
Some might consider this as an insight that Ryuuta's smart, but it's really just one party trick he's able to keep up. He's not smart in the least, he has much self-awareness that he's as dumb as a sack of bricks in relation to academia but he's much better dealing with someone's feelings, seeing through people's soul or otherwise. He knows that if he were to act any different, he'd upset routine around him and cause concern. In fact, in any instance he goes overboard with his shouting or anything, it's actually a sign of feeling anxious and trying to keep the ball running. Ryuuta copes by turning the dial up to 11, only when he's absolutely cornered would he stop.
Though all in all, he's still a douchebag.
Backstory:
Once upon a time in a little town called Yuuhi, there lived a poor family consisting of only a mother and a son, god knows where supposed man of the house went. Though neither the mother nor child gave much fucks about that guy, they're pretty alright on their own. Sort of. Much of the childhood of that kid, Ryuuta Ippongi, tend to revolve helping out his mom whenever he can. He tried to put a nice balance between work and play, but by the time he was in high school, most people tend to mistook him for a delinquent thanks to his tendencies to miss socializing and skipping out on class.
But again, Ryuuta didn't had much fucks, he knew they were concerned on some sense but not completely, it was kind of easy to see even though he wasn't entirely sure how to explain it. It worked to his advantage however, the general opinion of his classmates about him tend to be overall positive so no one's picking any fights or anything to make his mom worry over his pretty pointless school social circle. The whole thing about the souls were pretty freaking and likely were something he could only see because if everyone has it, no one would reek teen drama, but hey they're really handy to help people out when they really need it.
But then he met Kai Doumeki. And on the same day, Ryuuta dropped out of high school after 6 months of enrollment.
Because yeah kids, your dream can only come true after you picked a fight with a guy who is 5 times older and practically towers you in regards of height! Nevertheless, after a stupid misunderstanding and friendship forming in a way that can only be seen in a shonen manga, Kai understood Ryuuta in a way no other had, he wanted to help people and he could utilize his strange, soul seeing ability even further. Kai took Ryuuta under his wing to train him in the ways of the Yuuhi Oundan squad, helping others by cheering to the very core of their spirit.
And it was awesome.
15 years old and a bright-eyed rookie, Ryuuta worked through the ranks and cheered on as best as he could. He always loved the satisfaction of helping those in need, to cheer them on and telling them they could do impossible feet was just fucking incredible, to see those faces turn from frustration to absolute joy in getting their personal victory. It was just. Fucking incredible. From time to time, from cheer to cheer, this incredible feeling of helping others couldn't possible get old.
But it did.
His success rate was near to perfection, he kept on a good cheer and always did his best; so he couldn't quite understand why slowly felt more worn out with each new mission. Perhaps it was from the rare cases of failure or perhaps the harsh reality that once one jumped hurdle, there were more endless hurdles to come to jump for eternity. He was only 18 yet his worries felt like they weren't leaving any time soon.
So the obvious answer would be turning on to girls and going a bit more physical.
Most people generally just count his hormones finally kicking after being ignored for a couple of years, though it wasn't the most surprising turn of events seeing as Ryuuta tended to flirted with girls every now and then out of missions.
That more or less was Ryuuta's life for a couple of years until another wide-eyed adolescent joined in their ranks as the new kid. That kid happened to be Hajime Tanaka, who frankly got a stink eye from Ryuuta for the first couple seconds. Couple of seconds. Because soon enough, he sees a lot of things he used to be in Hajime, one of them is being so eager and honest to help others. This was really great, he just turned legal only quite recently and yet he has enough pessimism to be someone decades older than him. Of course, Hajime had more wit and wisdom than he was at that age so the difference could be considered ridiculous. But his clear dedication to their team and mission, obviously, this kid was rigid as a rock and very likely hardly interact any other kids- time to change that. Ryuuta makes it his duty to bother Hajime and embarrass him much as he could, and in a way, he felt slightly more alive than before.
There went things on Hajime's first year, missions regarding meek office ladies, overenthusiastic teacher for an all girls' academy, among other things along with more (unofficial) team bonding meetups during downtime.
AND THEN A METEOR WAS ATTACKING EARTH HOLY SHIT.
B-but hey, if they could enlarge a business man to fight a giant mouse, they could fight against the impossible right…?
Thank fuck, yeah they can. It took an impossible amount to cheer everyone, and literally everyone in the world. Before he knew it, the whole world was uniting, every person's voice screaming in unison and then. They won. The meteor was destroyed and earth was saved.
He might considering getting something strong, but then again, weird shit happens a lot anyways.
Years passed, things went on; Hajime finally got a promotion in the shape of a hat, Kai's hat exploded on his head. Both events may or may not be related to each other.
Most of the quiet seven years tend to have him saving at least one night in the week to make dinner for his mother and retell the week's events to her, it was the least he could do now with how constantly busy he was, even if things seemed more stilled. He was already pessimistic for an Ouendan leader, nothing could be worse than that.
BUT IT DID. IN THE FORM OF ASAHI'S OWN GOLDEN BOYS SUDDENLY FLOUNDERING AROUND IN THEIR TURF.
Took him awhile to notice the same trio clad in a different uniform beating them to the punch for quite a few times. But it didn't take him long to realize it was a rival in the business. Even though most of everyone told him to chill the fuck out, he couldn't help but light up in his own competitive spirit at the sudden rivalry especially to the blond pretty boy with the eyebrows.
Things definitely became more insane with missions becoming a race to see who gets to cheer someone out first and Ryuuta was practically lost in the rivalry until the whole sun not lighting up happen.
Just out of nowhere, the sun was dying and things were turning to ice fast.
He was really dead, wow.
But true to how strange and mindbending his life was; he, Suzuki and Saito were brought back to life from sheer life force of how many people were yelling for them to be not be crushed under ice. Which to say, it worked flawlessly. Ouendan magic was fucking amazing, man. And so both teams were working together, bringing people of the world together in unimaginable passion that it ignites the sun back to life. At last, the world was saved and petty differences were put aside to celebrate together. So far, things aren't so bad.
Things got even better when that asshole Saionji get sent away. Well, until Doumeki sat right next to him while he was sitting on a bench, pat him on the shoulder and bluntly told him "you're going to Smash Academy to work together with Saionji." And he was about to argue back until he suddenly found himself on the next trip to Final Destination City, suitcase in hand and a cellphone after 27 years of avoiding getting one.
Anything Else?:
- Just slap him with Hayato for everything, please. This include fake marriage situations. Shocky says it's ok.
- HE CAN SEE THROUGH SOULS
- Red team all the way yo.
- he calls his mom because no way he's gonna get the homesick status ailment.

[Beep boop, look here, yet another poor sap seems to have ended up in Smash, judging by the rather unhappy look on his face.]
